4 OCTOBER 2024
Today was nothing short of magical on the humpback highway. We started our morning with the incredible sight of not one, but three separate pods of humpback whales, all migrating south for the season. Among them was a mother and her calf. One pod appeared to be in hot pursuit of another just off Cabbage Tree Island, giving us an exciting display of playful interactions between these massive creatures.
As if the whales weren’t enough, we were also treated to sightings of both bottlenose and common oceanic dolphins adding to the excitement of the morning cruise.
The afternoon brought even more spectacular moments. We spent much of the time in the company of a very active mother and calf. The calf was particularly energetic, practicing its breaching skills with gusto. At one point, they decided to come in nice and close to our boat. We were “mugged” in the best way possible, as they swam under and around our boat, with the calf continuing to breach right next to us!
Adding to the spectacle, Australian fur seals were spotted around the boat providing a perfect finish to a day full of marine life wonders.
