It has been an absolutely beautiful day on the water for our Whale Watch Cruises onboard MV Osprey, with sunshine, calm conditions and plenty of marine wildlife to enjoy.
During this morning’s cruise, our crew reported sightings of approximately half a dozen Humpback Whales. The morning began with a very special encounter – a northbound Humpback mother travelling with her tiny calf.
We also spotted a juvenile Humpback heading south, making it one of the early whales beginning the long return journey towards the cooler southern feeding grounds.
The highlight of the morning came when we encountered another Humpback mother and her young calf. Mum surprised everyone onboard with a spectacular full-bodied breach, creating an enormous burst of white water as she landed on the ocean’s surface. It was an unforgettable sight and a wonderful reminder that you never know what these magnificent whales may do next!
The sunshine continued for our afternoon Whale Watch Cruise. Shortly after leaving the harbour, we located two Humpback Whales near Fingal Island Lighthouse and followed the pair as they travelled north.
At one point, our crew spotted another whale’s blow behind the vessel. However, this whale appeared to take a long sounding dive and remained elusive for the rest of the cruise.
The marine wildlife encounters continued with a seal spotted feeding in the waters near Fingal Island. Once we reached the northern side of Cabbage Tree Island, we were joined by a large pod of energetic Common Dolphins – the perfect finale to another spectacular day exploring the waters of Port Stephens.
