28 JUNE 2026
Passengers aboard our 10am Whale Watch Cruise were treated to an incredible display of classic humpback behaviour. Throughout the morning we witnessed spectacular head lunges, breathtaking breaches and powerful tail slaps, all occurring within close proximity to the vessel.
Wildlife photographer Lee Matthews joined us on board this morning, and while reviewing her stunning images it appears that two of today’s breaching whales may have been heavily pregnant females – a remarkable sight as they continue their northern migration.
To round out an already incredible morning, guests also enjoyed visits with the playful dolphins and the Australian Fur Seals resting around Cabbage Tree Island.
The afternoon cruises began with a passing light shower before clearing into one of those magical winter afternoons Port Stephens is famous for.
Both Hinchinbrook Explorer and Envision headed towards the iconic Fingal Island Lighthouse in search of more whale activity.
The crew aboard Hinchinbrook Explorer followed several active pods travelling behind Boondelbah Island. With three or more pods in the area – each consisting of two to three whales – the action barely stopped. Passengers enjoyed repeated breaching displays, dramatic peduncle throws and powerful tail slapping as the whales continued their migration north.
Meanwhile, photographers aboard Envision were rewarded with the image every whale photographer dreams of. Everything aligned perfectly as a breaching humpback launched from the water with the historic Fingal Island Lighthouse standing proudly in the background – a true Port Stephens postcard moment.
One of the most exciting parts of whale watching is that no two cruises are ever the same. Today’s combination of crystal-clear water, multiple active pods, spectacular behaviours and iconic coastal scenery created memories our guests won’t soon forget.
With the migration well underway and more whales arriving every day, there has never been a better time to experience the magic of whale watching with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises.
We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
