What an incredible morning on the water for our guests aboard MV Osprey and Envision!

Today’s whale encounters were nothing short of spectacular, with both vessels witnessing one of the most exciting behaviours seen during the humpback whale migration – a heat run.

A heat run begins when a female humpback whale signals that she is ready to mate. She takes the lead, travelling at an impressive pace, while multiple male whales race behind her, competing to prove their strength and dominance. The result is an energetic and action-packed display that is as thrilling as it is fascinating.

This morning, both vessels followed an active pod of at least seven humpback whales from Point Stephens all the way to Cabbage Tree Island. The whales zigzagged through the water, surfacing frequently for powerful breaths while the competing males bellowed loudly and launched themselves forward with aggressive head lunges in pursuit of the female.

The combination of booming whale vocalisations, dramatic surface activity and breathtaking acrobatics created an unforgettable experience for everyone on board. These are the moments that remind us just how incredible nature can be – you simply can’t take your eyes off the action.

Heat runs are among the most sought-after whale behaviours to witness, and today’s encounter was a fantastic reminder that every cruise offers something unique during the migration season.

If you’ve been thinking about joining us this whale season, now is the perfect time. The whales are putting on an amazing show, and you never know what incredible behaviour you’ll witness next!

We look forward to welcoming you aboard for your own unforgettable whale watching adventure with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises.
