Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

2 JUNE 2026

The cooler winter air has arrived in Port Stephens, and for us that can only mean one thing – the humpback whale migration is well underway!

While many of us are reaching for our jackets and scarves, the whales are making their incredible annual journey north along Australia’s east coast. The good news? The whales don’t seem to mind the cooler conditions at all, with successful sightings reported on both our morning and afternoon Whale Watch Cruises aboard the MV Osprey today.

Today’s whale activity was concentrated between Fingal Island and Little Island, where guests were treated to some spectacular displays. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly an incredible breach, with one humpback launching almost completely clear of the water in a breathtaking display of power and agility.

Our 10apm Whale Watch Cruise encountered four humpback whales travelling northbound, providing fantastic viewing opportunities for everyone onboard. One particularly curious whale made its way close to the stern of the vessel, giving passengers an unforgettable up-close encounter.

Of course, whale watching in Port Stephens is about much more than just whales. The region’s rich marine environment was on full display today, with several impressive bird species spotted hunting overhead, including a juvenile, White-bellied Sea Eagle and an Eastern Osprey.

Adding to the excitement, a large pod of more than 30 Bottlenose Dolphins was observed near Yacaaba Headland, delighting guests as they travelled through the bay.

With whale numbers continuing to increase as the migration progresses, now is the perfect time to experience one of nature’s greatest wildlife spectacles. Every day on the water brings something different, and today’s sightings are a wonderful reminder of why Port Stephens is one of Australia’s premier whale-watching destinations.

So rug up, bring your camera, and join us aboard the MV Osprey as we continue following the mighty humpbacks on their northern journey.

We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
