Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

14 SEPTEMBER 2024

It’s Saturday, the rain has gone, the sun is out and offshore with no wind chop and just a gentle rolling swell our vessel MV Osprey ventured out for another day of Whale Watching.

We first spotted just off Zenith Beach a mother, calf & escort with one of the adults rolling about showing off it’s large white belly and underside right up above the water level. As we moved on and headed north near Broughton Island we could see lots of blows and breaching in the distance so we decided to head closer. There, we located two fully grown humpbacks head lunging and breaching before one of them decided it wanted a closer spot of human watching and mugged us. Coming in along the left side, right side, underneath, front & back of the boat, our passengers were beyond excited to have one of the friendly giants so up close and personal.

Whilst offshore we had from count, 12 common dolphins riding the bow wave of our boat which is always something pretty special to see. Moving on to Cabbage Tree we saw 7 seals sunning themselves, and then just around the corner a pod of 20 bottle-nose dolphins feeding off bait fish with a young calf getting in on the action too!
