It was another fantastic day on the water for our whale watching guests, with some truly memorable wildlife encounters just off the spectacular coastline of Port Stephens.
Our first sightings were two pods of migrating Humpback Whales cruising slowly northbound off Fingal Island. The whales were travelling through around 40 meters of water, taking their time as they continued their incredible annual migration.
These magnificent giants delighted everyone on board with some fascinating behavior, including several impressive peduncle throws—where a whale lifts its powerful tail stock high into the air before crashing it back onto the water’s surface. While the exact reason for this behavior isn’t fully understood, it is thought to be a form of communication, play, or a way of dislodging parasites. Whatever the reason, it certainly made for an unforgettable display!
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, another Humpback Whale was spotted breaching near the islands, launching its enormous body clear of the water in a breathtaking display of strength and agility. Moments like these never fail to leave everyone on board in awe.
To complete an already incredible cruise, our local Bottlenose Dolphins were busy feeding off Tamaree Heads. Watching these intelligent marine mammals work together as they hunted for fish was the perfect way to finish another successful day on the water.
With whales continuing to migrate past our coastline in great numbers and dolphins active throughout the bay, there’s never been a better time to experience the magic of Port Stephens.
