Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

8 JUNE 2025

This morning’s whale watching trip was incredible! We spotted a pod of 4–5 Humpback whales straight out of the Heads, just 50 meters or less from the boat. The Humpbacks circled all around us for about 30 minutes—changing direction, diving every 4 minutes, and putting on a real underwater show. It looked like a heat run, with lots of swimming but not much surface activity. We did get a few tail flicks though! And as a bonus—7 seals lounging at the Cabbage Tree Island! What a wild morning on the water.

Success again for the afternoon whale cruises on this sunny long weekend Sunday. As we have traveled out of the bay we have spotted a pod of local Port Stephens Bottlenose Dolphins near the rocks at Yaccaba. The first whale sighting was near to Boondelbah Island with a juvenile Humpback Whale taking an interest in the vessel and swimming in quite close to the boat. We have then cruised just north of Cabbage Tree Island and found a pod of 2 Humpback Whales that have been very active with displays of breaching and tail slapping.

Our passengers aboard MV Osprey spent a wonderful afternoon with a solo Humpback Whale near to Little Island and had another pod not too far away that was tail slapping and creating alot of white water splashes making them easy to see.
