Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

7 JUNE 2025

SATURDAY SPECTACULAR!!!!!  With sunny & calm conditions offshore, our passenger on this morning’s Hinchinbrook Explorer cruise were treated to 3 very active pods of whales straight off Tomaree Headland with double breaches, head lunges and tail lobs.  Lots of action by one particular whale who came within 50 metres of our vessel putting on a real show.  There was also a large pod of Bottlenose dolphins offshore showing off their acrobatic skills. Reports from the crew on the 11am MV Osprey have also had success with a pod of whales close to the Fingal Island Lighthouse. At one point a Humpback Whales has swam within 10 meters of the boat giving all onboard a nice close encounter, even showing off with a half head lunge breach action.

Both vessels has cruised past Cabbage Tree Island to do a head count of seals basking in the sunshine of the rocks of the island, and then located Dolphins coming back in through the headland at Yaccaba.

Many believe the sighting of an Albatross brings good luck, with nearly as many Albatross sightings as Humpback Whales this certainly rings true for our passengers and crew aboard the Hinchinbrook Explorer. We have spent time with 4 pods of Humpback Whales, with plenty of delightful action on display of twisting full body breaches, head lunging and close encounters with the boat.
