Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

6 JUNE 2026

As we cruised out through the harbour entrance this morning, the excitement began building almost immediately when our crew spotted whale blows on the horizon. With calm conditions and eager eyes scanning the ocean, anticipation was high as we made our way towards Fingal Island.

Before long, we were rewarded with an unforgettable encounter as three large adult Humpback Whales appeared alongside us. Initially, the whales were a little shy, keeping their distance as they continued their northbound migration. However, it didn’t take long for them to become more comfortable with our presence, treating passengers to a wonderful display of natural behaviour.

The highlight of the encounter was watching these magnificent giants lift their enormous tails high above the water before gracefully diving beneath the surface. Each tail lift was met with excitement and admiration from everyone onboard, providing perfect photo opportunities and lasting memories.

As if the morning couldn’t get any better, our journey home was accompanied by some of Port Stephens’ most beloved residents. As we passed back through the headland near Mount Yacaaba, a playful pod of local Bottlenose Dolphins appeared to escort Moonshadow-TQC Cruises back into the bay. Swimming effortlessly alongside the vessel, the dolphins provided the perfect finale to an incredible wildlife experience.
