Whale Sightings

Today was a day for the true ocean lovers.

After several days of cloudy skies and unsettled conditions, the sunshine finally returned and the seas calmed, creating the perfect opportunity to head back out onto the famous Port Stephens Whale Highway. The excitement onboard was contagious, with both passengers and crew thrilled to be back exploring our spectacular marine playground.

The wildlife certainly didn’t disappoint.

Our journey began with a remarkable sighting of a massive Loggerhead Turtle gracefully making its way through the clear waters. Not long after, passengers were treated to an unexpected encounter with a Hammerhead Shark, which lingered around the vessel for quite some time, giving everyone an incredible opportunity to appreciate this fascinating predator up close.

As we passed Cabbage Tree Island, we spotted a lone Australian Fur Seal enjoying a peaceful afternoon basking on the rocks, seemingly unbothered by the world around it.

The highlight of the day came when we located a pod of three Humpback Whales steadily making their northbound migration. The whales were travelling calmly, surfacing regularly and providing excellent viewing opportunities for everyone onboard.

Just when it seemed the encounter would remain a tranquil one, the whales suddenly became more active. Passengers watched in awe as several impressive tail lobs sent sprays of water into the air. Then, in a moment that caught everyone completely by surprise, one of the whales launched into a spectacular full breach, crashing back into the ocean in an unforgettable display of power and grace.

As quickly as the excitement began, the whales settled once again into their relaxed pace and continued their journey north along the coast.

Days like today are a wonderful reminder that every trip on the Port Stephens Whale Highway is unique. From turtles and sharks to seals and whales, the ocean always has a few surprises waiting for those willing to venture out and explore.
