Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

29 JULY 2023

Alert – cute baby pictures incoming! We have spotted a beautiful Humpback Whale swimming along side her very little calf this morning, with regulations in place to protect calves we have given the pair plenty of space but the images captured by our local photographer, Lee Matthews shows the gorgeous tiny calf in a lot more detail. A Humpback Whale calf can be born up to 3 – 4.5 meters in length and weigh up to 1 tonne. The pair have then been joined by another two adult males who have rushed in to investigate.

We have left the whales to continue their journey and cruised toward Cabbage Tree Island. There are a number of seals lying on the rocks at the foreshore of the island enjoying the sunshine, and a couple swimming in the water holding their flippers above the water line. As the capillaries of a seal are close to the surface of the skin seals are often seen holding their flippers out of the water to catch the sunbeams to warm their bodies.
