Back to Whale Sightings

29 AUGUST 2025

Port Stephens delivered an unforgettable day on the water, with both morning and afternoon whale watching cruises showcasing the true unpredictability and magic of the Humpback Highway.

Our morning departure encountered a pod of four energetic whales engaged in a heat run, powering northbound as part of their migration. Guests were treated to the thrill of seeing these giants compete in close company, before the excitement shifted to a lone Humpback Whale tail slapping in the distance. Interestingly, this whale was traveling southbound—a reminder of how dynamic the migration season can be, with individuals making unexpected detours and movements.

The afternoon cruise called for patience and perseverance, as the whales kept us waiting. But the reward was worth every moment—a breaching Humpback near Cabbage Tree Island suddenly stole the show. This spectacular whale treated passengers to repeated breaches and head lunges, filling the afternoon with cheers, camera clicks, and awe-struck faces.

Days like this perfectly capture the wonder of whale season in Port Stephens—powerful, unpredictable, and always memorable. Whether you’re witnessing competitive pods racing north or a single whale putting on a solo acrobatic performance, no two cruises are ever the same.
