Whale Watching Moonshadow TQC Cruises Port Stephens

Heat runs, breaches, tail slaps, and tail lobs galore this morning onboard MV Osprey as we ventured out just past our two headlands (Tomaree & Yacaaba). Our crew have located some very active whales, a pod of about 6 or so, that we decided to stick around with for sometime. Our crew were saying how they’d love to know what they were getting up to underwater as they would have a great amount of surface time, and then have some longer sounding dives in which one crew member said she could just see there was some kind of action happening underwater.

It’s very cool to see the whales leave their ‘footprint’ which has often been said to be one of the ways in which we can track whales movements underwater without visibly being able to see them. Generally a smooth glassy patch of water will appear after a powerful forward motion. With all of this underwater action happening this morning, there were many ‘footprints’ to see.

The afternoon cruise came across four Humpback Whales going in different directions (north and south).  They were cruising along quite slowly and possibly were asleep with one breach managed.  The MV Osprey ventured past Cabbage Tree Island on the way back into the D’albora Marina.
