14 JUNE 2026

What a magnificent day on the water for Moonshadow-TQC Cruises!

With brilliant blue skies and sunshine gracing Port Stephens, Sunday provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable day of whale watching. For many passengers aboard Hinchinbrook Explorer, there could hardly have been a better way to round out the weekend.

Our morning Whale Watch Cruise was treated to an incredible encounter with two active pods of Humpback Whales, each consisting of two adult whales. The crew observed what appeared to be dynamic communication between the two pods, with spectacular breaching displays occurring back and forth across the ocean. Before long, the whales closed the distance and joined together to form an affiliate pod, creating a truly special wildlife experience for everyone on board.

As the vessel made its way back through the harbour entrance along the Yacaaba Headland side, guests were treated to yet another encounter when a pod of Port Stephens’ resident Bottlenose Dolphins appeared to escort us home. Their playful presence was the perfect finishing touch to an already remarkable morning.

The excitement didn’t stop there.

Our afternoon Whale Watch Cruise was surrounded by whale activity from the moment we reached the open ocean. While whales could be seen throughout the area, we spent time with a playful pod of three Humpback Whales that delivered one of the most energetic displays of the season so far.

Passengers witnessed an extraordinary variety of surface behaviours, including powerful breaches, pectoral fin slaps, and dramatic tail slaps. The highlight of the afternoon came when the whales erupted from the water in breathtaking double breaches. At times they launched themselves skyward in perfect sequence, one after another. Other moments saw them breach in synchronisation, while individual whales put on their own spectacular performances.

Every breach was met with gasps, cheers, and cameras clicking throughout the vessel. It was the kind of wildlife encounter that reminds us just how incredible these gentle giants truly are.

As passengers disembarked at the end of the day, there was no mistaking the excitement on their faces. After spending time with such active and engaging whales, everyone stepped ashore riding a genuine “whale high”- the unforgettable feeling that only comes from witnessing these magnificent animals in their natural environment.

Days like today are exactly why whale watching in Port Stephens is such a special experience.
