14 JUNE 2025
We had luck on our side today, with a few showers around to start the day as we cruised out through the Bay and on towards the Fingal Island Lighthouse the rain stopped, and the sun appeared and the most beautiful rainbow was seen bathing the Lighthouse in colour! There are multiple pods of Humpback Whales migrating along the Port Stephens coastline, and our luck has continued with the most amazing display of active and playful whales; breaching, double breaching, tail lobs. We also experience a very close encounter with one whale taking an interest in the Hinchinbrook Explorer and swimming along behind the boat and continuing beside us.
First on the whale sightings for our afternoon passengers has been a pair of logging whales on the surface of the water. Logging is a behaviour observed when whales are resting and float motionless. This allows the whale to conserve energy and continue breathing while resting. As we have approached the whales have taken a deep dive of more than 10 minutes, so we have moved onto another pod close by. Again there are 10 or more pods within our vicinity but we have stayed with an active juvenile Humpback Whale which has been putting on quite the display of breaching and tail slapping.
