We had an incredible morning as we were dolphin watching with such a surprise to see a mother and calf Southern Right whales in the bay!

We have had them visit us in the bay in the past, but we haven’t seen them for a few years.

Cruising through the bay and rolling at the base of Nelson Head, this was shot this morning with beautiful Shoal Bay in the background.

The Southern Right Whale can grow to 19metres in length and up to 80 tonnes and can be identified by the lack of a dorsal fin and distinctive skin growths called callosities on their heads.

Callosities are as unique as a human’s fingerprint. This is how individual whales can be identified.
