Back to Whale Sightings

12 JUNE 2026

Today delivered everything that makes whale watching in Port Stephens so special, with spectacular autumn sunshine, glassy sea conditions, and some of the most exciting whale activity we’ve seen this season.

As we cruised along the famous Port Stephens Humpback Highway, guests were treated to incredible wildlife encounters from the very beginning. Friendly Bottlenose Dolphins and Common Dolphins made appearances throughout the day, while Humpback Whales seemed to be everywhere we looked. Blows could be seen in all directions, creating a sense of anticipation that only continued to build as the cruise progressed.

The whales certainly did not disappoint.

Guests witnessed an incredible display of natural behaviour, including powerful breaches both close to the vessel and on the horizon, spectacular tail lobs, graceful dives showcasing beautiful flukes, and energetic pectoral fin slapping. Every direction offered something new to admire, making for an unforgettable day on the water.

This afternoon’s Whale Watch Cruise was particularly extraordinary. Long-time Moonshadow-TQC friend and passionate whale enthusiast Lee described the experience as one of her “Top 5 Whale Watch Cruises of All Time” – high praise from someone who has spent countless hours observing these magnificent animals. Judging by the hundreds of photographs captured throughout the afternoon, it’s easy to understand why.

Picture-perfect conditions combined with constant whale activity created a truly remarkable experience. Guests were treated to repeated breaches right beside and directly in front of the vessel, dramatic head lunges, and two whales enthusiastically pectoral slapping within a pod of seven to eight Humpback Whales travelling north on their annual migration.

Adding to the excitement were the powerful vocal exhalations that echoed across the water each time the whales surfaced, reminding everyone onboard just how immense these animals truly are.

One of the most memorable moments came when several whales approached the vessel so closely that there was no need to crop the photographs. Guests were given an incredible opportunity to look directly into the eye of a whale as it surfaced alongside MV Osprey, creating a connection that few people ever have the chance to experience.

Days like today are exactly why whale watching in Port Stephens is considered one of Australia’s premier wildlife experiences. With the migration continuing to build momentum, every cruise offers the potential for unforgettable encounters.

If today’s adventure is anything to go by, the season ahead is shaping up to be truly spectacular.
