Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

1 AUGUST 2026

Today’s cruise ticked every box for unforgettable wildlife encounters!

✅ Humpback whales
✅ Offshore common dolphins
✅ Soaring seabirds

Passengers aboard MV Osprey enjoyed an exceptionally close encounter when a humpback whale crossed directly in front of the vessel’s bow—an incredible moment that had everyone reaching for their cameras.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the sight of a very young newborn humpback whale calf swimming alongside its mother. There is something truly special about witnessing a new life beginning its first migration through our waters.

The pair spent an extended period near the surface, giving passengers a wonderful opportunity to observe them together. Because a newborn calf cannot hold its breath for as long as an adult whale, it must surface regularly to breathe while remaining close to its protective mother.

Our bird enthusiasts were also treated to the beautiful sight of seabirds gliding effortlessly above the ocean, their wings outstretched just centimetres from the water’s surface.

And we certainly can’t forget the dolphins! Strikingly beautiful, two-toned common dolphins also made an appearance offshore, adding even more excitement to an already remarkable day on the water.

From a newborn humpback calf and its mother to playful dolphins and graceful seabirds, today showcased the incredible diversity of marine wildlife found along the Port Stephens coastline.

Every cruise is different, and you never know what extraordinary encounter may be waiting beyond the heads.
