Whale Watch Report – A Spectacular Day on the Water
Despite a chilly start, today’s beautiful sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for another memorable day of whale watching with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises.
As we departed Port Stephens Harbor, our crew and passengers kept a keen eye on the ocean, searching for the first signs of wildlife. It wasn’t long before we spotted our first albatross gliding effortlessly over the waves. These magnificent seabirds are often seen around whales, so whenever we spot an albatross, we know there’s a good chance whales won’t be far away.
Sure enough… there she blows!
Our first encounter was with a pod of humpback whales leisurely making their annual migration north. Everyone watched in anticipation as the whales surfaced to breathe before disappearing beneath the surface once again. Their steady rhythm kept everyone captivated as we patiently waited for each resurfacing. While this particular pod preferred a relaxed cruise rather than an acrobatic display, we did spot a couple of whales breaching in the distance, adding plenty of excitement to the morning.
The wildlife encounters didn’t stop there. Near Yacaaba Headland, we were treated to the sight of a large pod of bottlenose dolphins actively feeding, delighting everyone onboard with their speed and teamwork.
Afternoon Action
Our afternoon cruise headed a little further towards Boat Harbor, where we found a much more energetic group of humpback whales.
As we followed them along the coastline, one suddenly launched itself completely clear of the water, leaving everyone onboard gasping in amazement. The whales treated us to several spectacular breaches directly in front of the vessel and even one alongside the boat—a truly unforgettable experience. While breaching is one of the most spectacular whale behaviors to witness, it isn’t something we see every trip, making moments like these even more special.
To top off an incredible afternoon, a pod of playful common dolphins appeared and raced alongside the vessel, leaping gracefully through the waves as if putting on a show just for us.
No two whale watching cruises are ever the same. Every day on the water brings new surprises, unforgettable encounters, and unique moments with some of Australia’s most incredible marine wildlife.
We can’t wait to see what tomorrow has in store!
