Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

5 AUGUST 2024

With great conditions offshore today our crew onboard MV Osprey were keen to venture out and it seemed our local resident bottle nose dolphins were too as they were spotted on our journey leaving Nelson Bay & also looked to be heading in the same direction.

We picked up two whales just off Fingal Lighthouse. This couple came in nice and close to the boat looking a little inquisitive but decided not to stay with us for too long so we continued on with our search.

Not long after, we located a mother, escort and calf heading north & with a few more pods in the distance breaching we thought this was a good spot to stay and spend some time.

The Afternoon Whale Watch Cruise in Cruise Director Kathy’s words was SENSATIONAL.  MV Osprey followed a mother and calf for quite some time of the cruise.  Then our passengers spotted a whale much further out who was doing lots of breeching.  As MV Opsrey is a Fast Cat we reached the whale is super quick time to catch the exciting action.  When we got close it gave us a wave.  Such spectacular conditions on the water today which are expected to continue through the week.
