Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

3 OCTOBER 2025

It was a fantastic day out on the Humpback Highway with so much marine life putting on a show for our passengers.

As MV Osprey departed the d’Albora Marina local Photographer, Lee Matthews has spotted an Osprey soar above.  With the power of a telescopic lens,  Lee has captured the most amazing eyeball to eyeball photo. Check out the spectacular talons on this gorgeous bird.

We began the cruise with an incredible sight inside the harbour – a huge pod of Bottlenose Dolphins leaping and playing around the vessel. Just as spirits were high, we were met at Tomaree Headland by a beautiful Humpback mother, her calf, and an escort. For a moment it looked like they were heading into the harbour, but instead they turned gracefully and continued their journey south.

Next stop was Cabbage Tree Island, where our ever-entertaining colony of fur seals were basking on the rocks. Among them, we also spotted a few lazy whales cruising nearby, surfacing slowly and enjoying the calm waters.

The real highlight came as we tracked back south and reunited with the mother, calf, and escort. This time the pair put on an explosive display of tail slapping, with the calf mimicking mum’s powerful moves – a thrilling reminder of just how playful and energetic these young whales can be.

To top it all off, the horizon was dotted with whales in every direction, a spectacular sight that showcases just how alive the waters of Port Stephens are at this time of year.

Another unforgettable day on the water with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises!
