Whale Watching Moonshadow TQC Cruises Port Stephens Lee Matthews

Spring Sunshine, a Playful Calf and a Dolphin Surprise

What better way to spend a spring morning than out on the water, soaking up the warm sunshine and searching for whales?

Today, passengers aboard Moonshadow-TQC Cruises’ Hinchinbrook Explorer enjoyed a memorable encounter with a humpback mother and calf just north of Cabbage Tree Island.

Our encounter began quietly, with the pair spending some peaceful time together. It’s possible the calf was feeding, although we couldn’t confirm what was happening beneath the surface.

Then the activity picked up!

The pair approached close to Hinchinbrook Explorer, giving passengers a wonderful view as the calf rolled through the water, flashing its little white belly. Breaches and head lunges followed, with plenty of lively moments to keep everyone watching.

Mum made an impression of her own, showing her strength with powerful tail whacks against the water’s surface. Seeing her alongside her energetic calf was a highlight of the morning.

Adding to the excitement, a pod of common dolphins also came close to the boat—a lovely bonus during an already action-packed cruise.

Every day on the water brings something different, and today delivered a wonderful mix of quiet observation, spectacular whale activity and a dolphin surprise.

Join Moonshadow-TQC Cruises for a spring whale-watching adventure and discover what the next day on the water has in store.
