A great morning on the water! We didn’t have to travel far from the coastline before finding our first humpback friends. Just near Little Island, we came across two large humpback whales casually making their way south. They were giving us some lovely surface time, with plenty of tail dives and a few impressive tail slaps along the way.
The encounter soon became even more special! After around 20 minutes, several more whales joined the pair, growing the group to five or six humpbacks – including a calf. The whales spent quite some time moving in circles around the boat, giving everyone on board fantastic opportunities to watch their natural behaviour from different angles.
The dolphin action started before we even reached the whales! On our way offshore, we found lots of bottlenose dolphins cruising and surfing the waves around Boondelbah Island. They were clearly having a great time, riding the swell and playing in the water as we watched them enjoying their morning.
No time for a seal stop today! With so much time spent enjoying our whale friends, there simply wasn’t enough time to visit the Australian fur seals at Cabbage Tree Island. It’s not every day you get to spend such a long time with a pod of humpbacks, especially with a calf in the group!
