It has been another spectacular day on the water with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises, as the annual Humpback Whale migration continues to deliver unforgettable encounters off the Port Stephens coastline.
Our morning adventure began with the iconic Fingal Bay Lighthouse standing watch over three separate pods of northbound Humpback Whales. Each pod featured at least two large adults, calmly making their way along the coastline. It truly was a case of “just keep swimming” as these gentle giants cruised effortlessly through the clear blue waters.
The whales were incredibly relaxed, often approaching close to the vessel and spending extended periods at the surface, giving everyone on board fantastic viewing opportunities. Guests were treated to several beautiful tail flukes as the whales completed graceful sounding dives beneath the ocean’s surface—a classic reminder of the elegance of these magnificent animals.
As the whales continued their migration north, we made our way to Cabbage Tree Island, where four Australian Fur Seals were enjoying a lazy afternoon, basking in the winter sunshine on the rocky shoreline.
The excitement only increased during the afternoon cruise.
Heading straight out through the Shoal Bay headland, our crew encountered an impressive pod of six Humpback Whales. Moments later, the whales erupted into a thrilling heat run – one of the most exhilarating behaviours witnessed during the migration season.
Guests watched in awe as powerful adult males jostled for position, displaying spectacular head lunges, enormous peduncle tail throws and thunderous tail slaps across the surface. The raw strength and energy of these incredible animals created an unforgettable wildlife spectacle that few people ever get to experience.
Adding to the excitement was a massive offshore pod of more than 40 Common Oceanic Dolphins, actively chasing schools of fish through the bay. Their speed, agility and coordinated movements provided another incredible display of marine life in action.
To finish an already remarkable day, we returned to the familiar residents of Cabbage Tree Island, before making one final wildlife stop near Yacaaba Headland, where our local Port Stephens Bottlenose Dolphins were busy feeding close to shore.
Days like today are exactly why Port Stephens is regarded as one of Australia’s premier whale watching destinations. With migrating Humpback Whales, playful dolphins, curious seals and spectacular coastal scenery all in one cruise, every trip offers something unique.
