Port Stephens Whale Watching Blog – A Calf’s Day of Play and Connection
What an extraordinary day out on the water! Both the morning and afternoon Whale Watch Cruises aboard the Hinchinbrook Explorer have had the rare pleasure of spending time with the very same mother-and-calf pair of Humpback Whales — a true testament to the magic of the Port Stephens marine environment.
In the morning, calm sea conditions provided the perfect backdrop for quiet observation as the pair lingered behind the offshore islands. Mum appeared to alternate between feeding her calf and logging on the surface, resting peacefully in the sunshine. The gentle rhythm of their movements created a serene experience for all on board — the kind of stillness that reminds us just how special these encounters are.
By the afternoon, the dynamic had shifted. The mother-and-calf duo had been joined by an escort, adding an extra layer of excitement. The playful young calf stole the show — rolling, tail-lobbing, and splashing about in the sparkling water while passengers watched in awe. It’s moments like these that capture the pure joy of whale watching, as the next generation of Humpbacks learns and grows before our eyes.
As if that wasn’t enough, the day was capped off by the breathtaking sight of over 60 Offshore Common Dolphins racing alongside the vessel — their speed, agility, and playful energy a perfect complement to the whales’ calm majesty.
Every cruise with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises offers something different, and today’s encounter reminded us of the wonder that awaits on every trip across Port Stephens’ blue expanse — from peaceful whale moments to wild dolphin displays.
