We spent most of our cruise time this morning with migrating whales approx. 1 mile off Cabbage Tree Island. These whales didn’t seem to want to show us their acrobatic displays, rather spending mainly surface time as they headed north on their northern migration. We did have some very excited common dolphins entertaining our passengers with bow riding and criss-crossing playfully in front of the boat. And then spotted a lone seal swimming in the water off Fingal Lighthouse.
This afternoon one of our resident whale fanatics was out at Boat Harbour’s Whale Watching platform and gave us an exciting call just before our 1:30pm cruise head out, saying there was a massive heat run that we just had to see, so of course that’s exactly where we headed!
What an exhilarating sight to come across five huge male humpbacks in a heat run with one female all vying for her attention! Our crew and passengers were given a show with constant breaches, pectoral fin slaps, and one male who was very keen on his tail slap and just continued slapping his tail for about 20mins non stop.
There were also a few large pods of common dolphins who wanted in on the action and couldn’t help but splash about with them.
