Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

23 JUNE 2026

It’s becoming our version of Groundhog Day – except instead of seeing the same thing every day, we’re seeing more whales!

Today delivered yet another incredible whale watching experience aboard Moonshadow-TQC Cruises, with multiple humpback whale sightings and spectacular displays throughout the day.

Our passengers aboard the Hinchinbrook Explorer headed out towards Fingal Island, and it wasn’t long before excitement began to build. As we approached one of the whale pods, we could see plenty of activity occurring in the distance. Powerful tail slaps and energetic pectoral fin slaps kept everyone entertained as the whales put on a show from afar.

As we moved closer, the whales settled down and resumed their northbound migration, gracefully travelling through the waters of Port Stephens as they continue their annual journey.

Bird enthusiasts onboard were also treated to a couple of special sightings. Among the seabirds spotted were a Giant Petrel and either a Black-browed or Shy Albatross. The Black-browed Albatross gets its name from the distinctive dark line running through its eye towards the bill, making it one of the more recognisable albatross species seen offshore.

The afternoon cruise was equally remarkable. Once again, an abundance of humpback whales appeared to be waiting for our arrival offshore. While witnessing a whale breach is always an unforgettable experience, today’s encounter took things to another level.

Passengers watched in amazement as two humpback whales breached within just 50 metres of the vessel, launching their enormous bodies completely clear of the water almost simultaneously. The sheer power, force and size of these magnificent animals left everyone onboard absolutely flabbergasted.

With whale numbers continuing to increase each day and sightings becoming more frequent, the 2026 whale season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory. If today’s encounters are anything to go by, there are plenty more unforgettable moments still to come.

We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
