The Winter Solstice has arrived, marking the shortest day of daylight for the year – and what a spectacular way to spend it, surrounded by the incredible migration of Humpback Whales off the coast of Port Stephens.
With cooler temperatures settling in, warm winter layers, scarves, and beanies were certainly appreciated by guests heading out onto the water today. The crisp winter air was more than rewarded with another exceptional day of whale sightings.
Whales were abundant throughout the day, and passengers aboard our cruises didn’t need to travel far offshore before encountering multiple pods making their way north along the coastline. We spent time observing a relaxed group of whales that remained near the surface, providing fantastic viewing opportunities for everyone on board.
Adding to the excitement, passengers were treated to a surprise breach close to the vessel, while several more spectacular breaches could be seen further out on the horizon. These powerful displays never fail to leave guests in awe.
One of the standout encounters of the day came when a large adult Humpback Whale showed a particular interest in our vessel Envision on the 11am Whale Watch Express with Aquamarine Adventure, making several close passes and giving passengers an unforgettable wildlife experience. Local photographer Lee Matthews, who joined us on board today, summed up the encounter perfectly, commenting that there was “no need to crop the images” thanks to the whale’s incredible proximity.
Our afternoon Whale Watch Cruise continued the trend of outstanding sightings. Calm sea conditions made for comfortable viewing as numerous pods were observed steadily continuing their migration north. While most whales were focused on their journey, one individual paused to showcase its immense strength with an impressive peduncle throw, lifting its powerful tail stock clear of the water in a dramatic display.
Before returning to port, guests also enjoyed a visit past Cabbage Tree Island, where the resident seals were relaxing on the rocks, providing the perfect finishing touch to an already memorable afternoon.
With whale numbers continuing to increase along the coast and excellent viewing conditions forecast, now is a fantastic time to join us on the water and witness one of nature’s greatest migrations.
