Today delivered everything that makes whale watching in Port Stephens so special, with spectacular whale behaviour, playful dolphin interactions, and even a visit to our winter seal residents!
Passengers aboard MV Osprey enjoyed an unforgettable morning on the water, beginning with a truly special interaction between a large pod of offshore Common Dolphins and two migrating Humpback Whales.
The energetic dolphins could be seen darting effortlessly around the whales, weaving in and out as the two species shared the same stretch of ocean—a fascinating display of marine life that few get to witness.
As we continued our search offshore, excitement grew as another pair of Humpback Whales treated everyone to several breathtaking synchronised breaches in the distance, launching clear out of the water together in an incredible display of power and grace.
Before returning to the marina, we cruised along the north-western side of Cabbage Tree Island, where passengers were delighted to observe the seals that make the island their winter home, resting comfortably on the rocky shoreline.
The afternoon cruise was packed with whale activity, with around half a dozen pods of Humpback Whales spread throughout the area.
Passengers were treated to an action-filled afternoon featuring repeated breaching displays, spectacular pectoral fin slaps, and yet another impressive double breach in the distance as two whales launched almost simultaneously from the ocean.
To finish an already incredible day, we were welcomed home by one of Port Stephens’ most iconic residents—a pod of our local Bottlenose Dolphins cruising gracefully around Yacaaba Headland, providing the perfect finale to another memorable day on the water.
Every day on the water is different, and today’s encounters were another reminder of why Port Stephens is one of Australia’s premier whale watching destinations. From curious dolphins and playful seals to the spectacular migration of Humpback Whales, there’s always something extraordinary waiting just beyond the heads.
