A Close Encounter on the Humpback Highway
Port Stephens Whale Watching Update — Moonshadow-TQC Cruises
There are some days on the water that linger with you long after the engines are switched off – and today was one of them.
Our morning cruise on the famous Humpback Whale Highway began in classic spring style, with calm seas and a soft fog hugging the coastline. It didn’t take long before we located a peaceful Humpback mother and her young calf. The pair were enjoying some well-deserved rest, spending extended time on the surface “logging” – a behaviour where whales relax at the surface with little movement. Guests were treated to a tranquil scene, a quiet reminder that migration isn’t always a race — sometimes it’s a slow and gentle journey south.
As the fog lifted and the afternoon sunshine broke through, we set off aboard Envision for our next cruise. To our delight, we encountered the very same mum and calf just outside the Shoal Bay headland. This time, the mood was much livelier – the curious calf treated us to a practice breach and head lunge, as if warming up for future big displays. Then came the moment we’ll all remember…
With our engines switched off and passengers leaning over the railings in anticipation, the mother gently guided her playful youngster right toward Envision. In a magical close-encounter, both whales surfaced beside the vessel, releasing a misty spray that – to the delight (and surprise!) of everyone onboard – showered the bow with a touch of “whale snot charm.” Not everyone gets an ocean blessing like that!
Another unforgettable day in Port Stephens – with restful moments, playful behaviours, and a breathtaking up-close visit that reminded us why sharing the water with these giants is so special.
Join us again tomorrow as the migration continues – you never know what you’ll see next aboard Moonshadow-TQC Cruises. 🐋✨
