Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

19 OCTOBER 2025

The crew aboard MV Osprey enjoyed a spectacular start to the day on the Port Stephens Whale Highway. This morning we encountered a mother Humpback Whale, her playful calf, and a protective escort between the offshore islands, all three gracefully making their way toward Fingal Island. The trio delighted everyone onboard with a series of powerful breaches, their immense splashes sparkling under the morning sun — a truly breathtaking sight for passengers and crew alike.

Continuing north, we came across another energetic pod of four Humpback Whales. Taking full advantage of the fresh north-easterly breeze, these whales were in high spirits, breaching into the wind and showcasing their strength and agility. It was one of those classic Port Stephens whale-watching mornings that remind us how lucky we are to witness these incredible creatures up close in their natural habitat.

The afternoon cruise brought a different kind of experience. While whales were sighted, they proved a little more elusive — their movements unpredictable and their dives lasting longer than usual. Our experienced crew did their utmost to track their positions and provide viewing opportunities, but as always, the behaviour of wild animals can vary greatly from day to day.

Each cruise is a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of nature. Whether playful and energetic or calm and mysterious, every encounter with these majestic Humpbacks is special — and we look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings on the Whale Highway with Moonshadow-TQC Cruises.
