Spring in Port Stephens brings with it one of nature’s most heart-warming sights – Humpback Whale mothers and their calves making their way south along the coastline. Today’s whale watching guests were treated to just that, encountering a nurturing mother and her young calf traveling in the company of three other Humpbacks.
While the larger pod eventually peeled away and moved further offshore, our passengers enjoyed the unforgettable moment of watching the bond between mother and calf as they cruised through the sparkling spring waters of Port Stephens. These seasonal encounters highlight the importance of our region as a safe and sheltered resting ground for mothers and calves before they continue their migration towards Antarctica.
Before returning to the dock, our crew steered past Cabbage Tree Island – and the wildlife show continued. Several Australian Fur Seals were soaking up the spring sunshine on the rocks, while another was spotted lolling playfully in the water, raising its fins above the surface. This behaviour, known as “thermoregulation,” helps seals balance their body temperature while they rest.
From Humpback mothers guiding their calves to the laid-back antics of the seals, today’s cruise perfectly captured the vibrant energy of springtime at Port Stephens. Every day on the water tells a new story, and we’re proud to share these magical experiences with our guests.
