Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

18 SEPTEMBER 2024

Cruising past Boondelbah Island this morning we spotted a mother and calf having a ‘whale of a time’ on their journey down south. Displaying continuous breaches by both. It looked to be somewhat of a lesson that mum was teaching her new calf and was great to bare witness to. A big pod of common dolphins with lots of calves amongst them were seen during our travels also and then a couple of fur seals arguing over the best sunbaking position.

This afternoon we got the pleasure of hanging out with a tail slapping calf and it’s mum, until the calf tuckered itself out and we headed north to give mum and bub a chance to rest. Ten minutes later, someone spotted splashing behind us so we made the decision to turn around. An escort had joined the pair and bub was practicing it’s breaching skills. At one point they all turned and headed directly for the boat but it was only a swim-by and they continued south. Check out the incredibly beautiful underside of one of the flukes.
