Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

17 JULY 2025

Today’s smooth glassy conditions provided the perfect opportunity for our passengers to get a up close and personal on the Humpback Highway. And we certainly did this morning as Hinchinbrook Explorer ventured just past the heads we came across a pod of 6x Humpbacks in a massive heat run. With so much head lunging being displayed and the whales bringing their head right up and out of the water, then diving under and zigzagging all around us, and popping up right next to us, this left not only our passengers but also our crew excited to say the least. Although we could also see many many more pods a little further along, we decided to sit with this pod for quite some time as they were just providing so much entertainment we couldn’t turn away.

Our frequent whale photograpy has spotted the unusal dorsal fin when editing photos taken aboard Envision this afternoon, with one of the whales appearing to be missing its dorsal, you can clearly see the difference in the photos of the two whales surfacing side by side.

It paid to look up to the sky today with the Williamtown RAAF out buzzing overhead at one point, although you do need to be very quick to look up as quite often you hear them after they have already flown past.
