Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

14 SEPTEMBER 2025

What a day to be out on the water! With calm seas, sunshine, and the bluest of blue water, Port Stephens turned on the perfect conditions for our whale watching cruises today.

This morning, our passengers were treated to the sight of a Humpback mother and her young calf making their way south on the great migration to Antarctic waters. Both delighted everyone onboard by lifting their tails high, showing off the sheer beauty and grace of these gentle giants.

In the afternoon, the experience was just as captivating, but with a twist of patience required. Our crew reported that the whales were “practicing their submarine impersonations,” diving for around 15 minutes at a time before resurfacing. Each appearance was worth the wait as passengers leaned over the rails, eyes fixed on the shimmering horizon for that next blow.

The wildlife encounters didn’t stop with the whales. The Australian Fur Seals at Cabbage Tree Island put on quite the show, barking and jostling on the rocks before splashing into the water with playful dives. And for those with sharp eyes, a majestic Sea Eagle glided past during the afternoon cruise—its talons clutching dinner fresh from the sea, a moment that added another layer of wonder to an already magical day.

Every cruise with Moonshadow-TQC brings a new story, and today’s tale was one of calm seas, bright skies, and unforgettable encounters with nature.
