It was another spectacular winter’s day on the waters of Port Stephens, with near-perfect sea conditions, brilliant sunshine and only light breezes creating ideal conditions for whale watching. While the morning air was certainly crisp, the sunshine quickly warmed everyone on board, making for a beautiful day to be out on the water.
Both Hinchinbrook Explorer and MV Osprey headed south of Fingal Island, where migrating Humpback Whales were steadily making their way north along Australia’s famous Humpback Whale Highway.
The whales initially appeared content to continue their migration, travelling in relaxed pods towards their tropical breeding grounds. However, nature had a few surprises in store!
Passengers aboard Hinchinbrook Explorer were following one pod while spotting several more in the distance when, without warning, a Humpback Whale launched into a spectacular breach remarkably close to the vessel. As excitement spread throughout the boat, the whale returned and moved even closer before delighting everyone with a series of impressive pectoral fin slaps. The enormous white pectoral fins crashed against the water’s surface, giving passengers an unforgettable close-up view of one of the Humpback’s most iconic behaviours.
Meanwhile, the crew aboard MV Osprey enjoyed a wonderful encounter of their own, tracking alongside a pod of whales that became increasingly curious about the vessel. The whales approached beautifully, providing guests with incredible close-range views as they continued their leisurely journey north.
As the afternoon sunshine bathed the coastline, our cruises were treated to even more sightings, with numerous pods of Humpback Whales steadily travelling north. Seeing these magnificent giants spread across the horizon is a reminder that the annual migration is now well underway, and each day on the water offers something unique and unforgettable.
With calm seas, stunning weather and plenty of whale activity, today was another memorable day for everyone who joined us.
