We could not of asked for a better day on the water for Father’s Day and the first day of spring! Our morning cruise aboard MV Osprey has located approx four pods of Humpback Whales with at least three whales in each pod, with all whales heading north bound. There was lots of action with a heat run of the males trying to out do each other to impress the female whales in the pod – heat runs are very interesting to view with the males quite often barging into one another to try and prove their dominance.
There has been a lone Humpback Whale breaching further off, with many more whales seen in the distance. a pod of Oceanic Dolphins have made an appearance and surfed along the side of the vessel. There were five very sleepy seals on Cabbage Tree Island.
During the afternoon whale watch cruise we have cruised towards Bennets Beach at Hawks Nest and located two pods; a mother Humpback Whale and her calf and another pod of two adult whales. The mum and calf were a little hard to keep track of with long sounding dives, but the two adult whales were very playful and spent a good amount of time on the surface of the water whole body rolling, spy hopping, pectoral fin slapping and tall tail hangs. As we have moved away from the whales are returned into the Bay on our way home we have come across a pod of the local Port Stephens Bottlenose Dolphins.
