Sustainability

At Moonshadow-TQC Cruises, our connection to the ocean runs deep. Every day, we have the privilege of sharing the incredible marine environment of Port Stephens with visitors from around the world, and with that privilege comes responsibility. We’re committed to developing our operations to be more sustainable, protecting local wildlife, and ensuring future generations can continue to experience the beauty of our region.

Moonshadow-TQC Cruises has been Advanced Eco Certified since 2001, achieving Hall of Fame status in 2021 for 20 years of Eco-Accreditation. This reflects our deep commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism. This accreditation, awarded under the respected ECO Certification Program by Ecotourism Australia, recognises operators who go beyond compliance, actively protecting natural environments, supporting local communities, and delivering authentic, nature-based experiences. Respect for Marine life

  • Every encounter with a wild animal is a privilege. Our crew are trained in responsible wildlife-viewing practices to ensure that whales, dolphins, and other marine creatures can continue their natural behaviour without interference. We believe the best wildlife experiences are those that put the animals’ welfare first. The Australian National Guidelines for Dolphin & Whale Watching states three (3) vessels per pod, however in Port Stephens, we have a local rule between the operators here to reduce that to two (2) vessels.
  • We also strictly adhere to the Approaching Rules set out in the guidelines for Adult & Juvenile Dolphins, as well as Adult Whales & Calves. If a Dolphin or Whale approaches the vessel, as per the Guidelines, we bring the vessel to a complete stop and allow wildlife to interact naturally in their own environment, once passed, we continue our cruise.

Eco-friendly operations:

  • We actively reduce waste, recycle onshore and onboard, and continue to phase out single-use plastics across our fleet.
  • We actively monitor our fuel consumption, and have policies in place to ensure our cruises are run in the most fuel efficient manner, while still ensuring a memorable cruise experience
  • All cleaning and maintenance products used onboard are marine grade and environmentally friendly

Cruise Experiences:

  • We have an exclusive selective licensing permit to access Fingal Island and also access to Point Stephens Lighthouse, this ensures we can provide necessary ongoing, and frequent updates to NSW National Parks to maintain the lighthouse and upkeep for future generations.
  • We also have an exclusive selective licensing permit to conduct tours on Broughton Island National Parks under strict rules set by NSW National Parks. This allows us to offer day tours out to Broughton Island while also acting as an advocate to NSW National Parks for ongoing maintenance including the public toilets, vermin control, gardening, maintenance of walking tracks

Care for our Community:

  • Partner with Port Stephens community and conservation groups such as Sea Shelter, NSW National Parks, ORRCA, OCCI, participate in the annual Dolphin Census
  • We actively seek out, employ and train local staff to strengthen our regional economy
  • We are very proactive in participating in local events and festivals year-round such as the Port Stephens Winter Festival, the annual Human Whale event, and the Port Stephens Car Show.
  • Promote inclusivity and accessibility for all guests – see our Accessibility page here

Fuel and energy efficiency:

  • Our vessels are maintained to the highest standards for fuel efficiency and low emissions, with ongoing upgrades to reduce environmental impact.
  • Energy-efficient systems and operational procedures help reduce fuel consumption and minimise emissions.
  • We are committed to ongoing upgrades and technology improvements that further enhance energy efficiency.
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting in booking office & maintenance, and across the fleet where possible

Education and awareness:

  • Each cruise is an opportunity to share knowledge about marine life, conservation, and the importance of protecting our oceans.
  • Our crew provide live & informative commentary highlighting the importance of protecting whales, dolphins, seals, and their habitats.
  • We support public awareness campaigns such as the Human Whale, Sea Shelter, NSW National Parks and local sustainability events.
  • Onboard interpretive signage, displays and digital content promote responsible wildlife viewing and eco-friendly travel habits.
  • Through our “Cruising Classroom” program, we engage local, interstate & international schools and community groups in hands-on marine education.
