Beautiful conditions this morning on Osprey, with the first lot of whales seen off Little Island, a mother and calf migrating north. In the distance we had a lone whale having it’s own ‘breach-athon’ where our crew said it would have breached by guess around 40 times! All up we did end up having a good five separate pods of whales around the vessel with also a pod of short beak dolphins swimming up alongside the whales. Making our way back in this morning we stopped off at Cabbage Tree Island and found one playful fur seal jumping out of the water onto the rocks and then back in again over and over which was super cute and fun to see. Coming back in past Yacaaba Headland we also had around 15 resident bottle nose dolphins make an appearance.
An incredible afternoon we had on the water with glassy & sunny conditions and an abundance of whales!
Our crew reported that they found “just whales everywhere!” off Fingal Lighthouse and could have easily been around 9-10 different pods of whales in our vicinity. One whale in particular was very active and not too far away from us displaying some very happy continuous breaching, lots of body rolling and pectoral fin slaps. Our crew member Michelle said “he/she just looked so happy”.
Because we spent so much time with the whales in awe of their displays we didn’t make it over to Cabbage Tree Island, but as we headed back in past Tomaree Headland we located a few pods of bottle nose dolphins and then again another pod coming into the marina.
