Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

27 OCTOBER 2024

The 10am Whale Watch Cruise aboard MV Osprey has cruised in a northerly direction in search of the whales today. The crew have reported sighting of a number of pods, on approach to the first pod of Humpback Whales we could see them on the surface of the water, the pod took a big dive and disappeared from sight during a sounding dive. We have moved onto the second pod of Humpback Whales consisting of mum, baby and another female escort. This pod was much more active, especially the calf who could be seen pec slapping, tail lobbing and at one point breached on the starboard side of the vessel. The escort and mum also took a keen interest in the boat and our passenger swimming alongside MV Osprey.

It did not take long to find the first pod of Humpback Whales for our afternoon cruise, with a pod consisting of mum, calf and escort just outside the headland close to Fingal Island. The trio of whales were swimming in a circling motion. We have moved on for this pod heading further off shore to a depth of water of around 80 meters, here we have come across a heat run of males chasing the females of the pod. In amongst the heat run was a mum and half calf, mum was seen nudging and gently lifting the calf to the surface in protection from the active males.
