Whale Sightings

Back to Whale Sightings

11 AUGUST 2024

We were lucky enough this morning to spot a mother and her adorable calf, looking to be just 2 to 3 weeks old.  The little one was so soft and light-colored. Captured beautifully by Lee Matthews.  A nanny whale was also with them, helping to care for the calf. Although the calf was curious, the mother and nanny kept it away from the boat and seemed to be teaching it a sounding dive. We soon found another pod of three whales further out.  We witnessed some tail slapping from a distance and as we got closer one whale gave us an amazing spy hop showing off its impressive size before heading back out to sea.  On our way back we saw adorable fur seals basking in the sun and our resident bottle nose dolphins near the heads.

As we ventured back out again this afternoon, the perfect sea conditions had us excited to get out there again. First up we located two large humpbacks traveling north in line with Fingal Lighthouse. These two were having pretty consistent downtime coming to the surface for around 4-5 breaths before heading back for another 5mins sounding dive. Halfway through our cruise time we found the mother and calf from this morning, however they no longer had their escort. It looked as though the calf was feeding from the mother as they were just mostly resting on the surface, and then suddenly the calf had a burst of energy and surprised us all with some amazing and incredibly cute breaches one after the other.

What a day!
